Amelia Coleman (British, fl. late 19th century), attributed to
Knowsley Park, Lancashire, c.1895
Oil on canvas
Signed ‘A. Coleman’ lower right

A beautifully observed late 19th-century English pastoral landscape depicting cattle grazing and resting in the parkland of Knowsley Park, Lancashire. Beneath an expansive, softly clouded sky, the landscape opens towards a distant horizon, with groups of cattle scattered naturally across the foreground and middle distance. Mature trees frame the view, while the warm greens, ochres and earthy tones of the pasture give the painting a particularly atmospheric and tranquil quality.

The work is signed A. Coleman lower right and is attributed to Amelia Coleman, dating to around 1895.The painting is presented in an impressive period-style gilt frame, with a broad gilt slip and richly ornamented outer moulding of scrolling foliage and decorative corner details. The generous proportions and warm gilding complement the traditional English character of the landscape particularly well, making this a substantial decorative painting suited to a country-house or classically furnished interior.

The painting has undergone extensive professional conservation and restoration including treatment of significant historic damage; full details on request.
