A finely painted mid-19th-century Dutch marine oil depicting sailing vessels at anchor in the calm waters of an estuary. Beneath an expansive and beautifully observed cloud-filled sky, a group of sailing craft rests upon still water, while figures gather on a timber jetty in the foreground beside a small rowing boat.Further figures and distant vessels lead the eye towards the low horizon.
Particularly accomplished for its intimate scale, the painting displays beautifully handled shipping, delicate rigging and an atmospheric treatment of light across the water and sky.

The composition belongs to the 19th-century Dutch Romantic marine tradition associated with painters such as Abraham Hulk and the Koekkoek family. Oil on canvas, circa 1850–1870, canvas size approximately 8 × 12 inches. Presented in a new period style frame with gilt inner slip
